Memphis, Tenn. (November 26, 2012) –

Anthony Jackson, a senior at Ridgeway High School, has been named a C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars Award winner.

Jackson is one of six students in the Greater Memphis area who received this week’s award for social sciences and history. C Spire Wireless will recognize more than 160 students during the 2012-2013 school year. Jackson and other weekly winners will be honored at a luncheon at the Hilton Memphis, Thursday, May 2, 2013.

Jackson is an outstanding student who enjoys challenging the textbook version of history. He holds a 5.19 weighted grade point average and scored 30 on the ACT. Jackson is in Ridgeway’s rigorous International Baccalaureate program and exhibits excellent critical thinking skills during daily classroom discussions. He plans to study economics at the University of Chicago.

When selecting a subject for a paper, Jackson chose a historical thesis on the Sacco and Vanzetti executions and their link to the abolition of the death penalty in Massachusetts. He is always thinking and questions how events may look through the eyes of different individuals. Jackson received the Yale Book Award and the Builder Award for World History and AP European History. He is a three-time recipient of the Memphis City Schools William H. Sweet Award for Academic Excellence.

In addition, Jackson is a member of the National Honor Society, Youth for America Club, Facing History and Ourselves, Teen Appeal, Kroger Youthworks Program and Bridge Builders. He volunteers at Shelby Farms and tutors other students.

The C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars program was conceived to identify and recognize high school students for excellence in academics, school leadership and community service. Now in its 7th year, the C Spire Academic All-Stars Awards are presented weekly for 28 weeks during the academic year from nominations submitted by school administrators.

Judges include educators from Rhodes College, The University of Memphis, LeMoyne-Owen College and Christian Brothers University. Each Sunday during the year, C Spire Academic All-Stars are announced in The Commercial Appeal.
